Tools in Construction There are many different tools, equipment and materials used during the construction phases These range from very large motorized powerful equipment to a regular hand- held hammer What is important is by whom and when they are used Safety is the first priority on a construction site UNT in partnership with TEA. Hand Tools are devices used for performing work on a material or a physical system using only hands to operate These can include; screwdrivers, hammers, measuring devices, vises, clamps, wrenches, knives, levels, etc. These tools are usually smaller than power tools and not as dangerous by themselves Hand tools can usually be carried on a person or in a carrying bag They could become dangerous if not used properly UNT in partnership with TEA. Power Tools are tools powered by an electric motor, a compressed air motor, or a gasoline engine These can include; drills, saws, grinders, nail guns, staplers, planners, jack hammers, etc. These tools take extra care and safety precautions to utilize properly These tools usually have a cord attached or power source, such as a battery The cords, batteries, and power of the tools make them very useful as well as dangerous Extra care must be taken to not leave these type of tools unattended UNT in partnership with TEA. Tool Safety Here are some basic safety rules to follow: Don't operate a tool until you've received proper training, understand how to use it and have been approved to use it. Inspect tools before using them to discover: Missing parts, loose or dull blades, cuts in plug and cord insulation, defects or cracks in the tool housing, problems with guards and safety shut-off switches . Make sure you have the right tool for the job, this can make things operate much smoother. UNT in partnership with TEA. Copyright ©. All rights reserved.

Know what kind of personal protective equipment will be needed; safety glasses and hard hats are a must have. Avoid wearing loose clothing or jewelry; these can get caught or fall into tools. Before turning on the power, double check the tool shut-off function, and location of the power switch. UNT in partnership with TEA. Copyright ©. All rights reserved.

Tool Safety Power tools must be grounded or be built with double/dual insulation Inspect the material and area where you will be working for hidden hazards such as electrical or plumbing lines, nails, steel hardware, or anything else that could cause you to lose control of the tool during operation Always keep the work area clean and organized, this helps to avoid accidents Watch your cords, they can become tangled or get in the way of your work UNT in partnership with TEA. Have proper lighting; being able to see what or where you are working can help to avoid many accidents. UNT in partnership with TEA. Copyright ©. All rights reserved.
