What Are Social Networking Sites? Social network is a website on the internet that brings people together in a central location to talk, chat and express messages, share ideas and interests, make new friends and participate in different activities. This type of collaboration and sharing of data is also referred to as social media or virtual community Examples: Facebook Google+ My Space Pinterest Twitter Youtube Yahoo! Did You Know…? 73% of people loose their smartphone after they have lastly went on their account

Why Has Social Networking Become So Important? People can stay in touch easier Reconnect with people they used to know Find new friends Organizes events quickly and sends information to many people Businesses can advertise their products with less expenses Can be used to tell employers positive things about yourself People can reach for support Did You Know…? Approximately 186 million Facebook users log in on a mobile device?

Advantages of Social Networking Social networks help police officers track down criminals who are too dumb to post there act online It helps people to make friends People can find/offer jobs for those in need It is more convenient to connect with others It is a convenient way of advertising products/information Did You Know…? 74% of people have used social networks to find a happy relationship which has lasted for a long time?

Disadvantages of Social Networking Unwanted rumors can spread Cyber bullying can occur Once you post something online, it is there forever Teens tend to get addicted, causing them to get lower grades in school You can connect with anyone you don’t know well Identity theft and fraud can take place It is a waste of time Did You Know…? 51% of social network users have claimed to have changed their lives in a negative way

Top Security Tips When Using Social Network Sites Always think twice before posting personal information online Accept friend requests from people only you and your family know Keep your settings to family and friends only to show personal informtion Come up with a password that know one will ever guess Use common sense when using social networking sites
