Short to Medium Term Priority issues for EGI, EMI, anD others Neil Geddes

Metadata Must be present and accessible to improve Trust Where is data from and what has been done to it ? Understandability What is it ? EGI-InSPIRE

Reduce the Fragmentation - in organisational, technology and service provision levels EGI/NGI liaising with individuals/initiatives in this domain. Advanced features and tool standardisation will probably happen within disciplinary groups. EMI could offer support in packaging the software solutions in a way that allows them to be integrated - they can be integrated into EMI-supported software distribution with minimal effort.   EGI-InSPIRE

Aim Low Large number of initiatives that are "aiming high": supporting extremely complex use-cases, looking into very complex interoperability challenges etc. There seems to be a clear gap in trying to link these initiatives, building community etc. Perhaps EGI/NGI/EMI role is to provide storage, hosting of databases, links to other data initiatives, interfaces to network services, "permanent" repositories for metadata distill the generic, slightly higher level use cases that would be the start of the blueprint for the data management services. EGI-InSPIRE

Importance of Distributed data EEF/ESFRI sessions Highlighted the importance of distributed infrastructures. Need to be aware of the requirements for distributed data: Date sources serving widely distributed communities Data collected in a distributed infrastructure Data replicated or distributed to meet challenges in scale of data or of access EGI-InSPIRE

How do I get started ? What should communities and users who are new to this actually do to get started ? How do we remove barriers to users storing data Legal issues (academic) credit Community practice (resistance to sharing) EGI-InSPIRE

Data Management Planning Need more formality in planning Make decisions about data consciously Need to support new communities in this EGI-InSPIRE
