Analyze the parts of the rhetorical situation. Today’s Goal (Record at top of p. 9) Analyze the parts of the rhetorical situation. Aristotle, 384-322 BC Greek Philosopher and Scientist Textbook p. 36-38 *Write your name on the inside cover of your textbook!*

Aristotle’s Rhetorical Triangle Copy on the top of p Aristotle’s Rhetorical Triangle Copy on the top of p. 9 – Leave room for notes Speaker Persuasive Text* Audience Subject

Aristotle’s Rhetorical Triangle (Don’t Copy) Speaker Persuasive Text: Essay Article Speech Cartoon Photograph Documentary Any other argument Persuasive Text* Audience Subject

Charlie Chaplin, 1889-1977 Director, Actor

The Great Dictator, 1940 What is the CONTEXT of this film?

Aristotle’s Rhetorical Triangle Take notes (p. 9) Speaker Speaker: person or group who creates the text for an occasion has a purpose (goal) for speaking may adopt a persona Persuasive Text* Audience Subject

Aristotle’s Rhetorical Triangle Take notes (p. 9) Speaker Audience: Single or multiple May be for, against, or neutral to speaker/subject Persuasive Text* Audience Subject

Aristotle’s Rhetorical Triangle Take notes (p. 9) Speaker Persuasive Text* Subject: Content NOT the same as purpose (goal) Audience Subject

Aristotle’s Rhetorical Triangle Speaker Why did Aristotle use a triangle to represent the rhetorical situation? Persuasive Text* Audience Subject

SOAPS - Analyzing the rhetorical situation copy on the bottom of p. 9 The Great Dictator My Movie Review Subject How we are all equal; fight fascism; use power/technology wisely Occasion Chaplin wants to call attention to the war, oppression Audience 1940s Americans Purpose Come together; unite Speaker Charlie Chaplin (as Hitler)

Practice (Chart on p. 9) Imagine you are about to write a review for a movie you either love (or hate). Use SOAPS to think through the rhetorical situation of your hypothetical movie review. Be prepared to share. SUBJECT = what will your review be about? OCCASION = what caused you to write this review? AUDIENCE = who do you want to read your review? PURPOSE = what do you want you audience to do as a result of reading your review? SPEAKER = you’re the speaker, but what qualifies you to write this review?

Argumentative Essay Prompt “Prejudice is a burden that confuses the past, threatens the future and renders the present inaccessible.” – Maya Angelou In a well-organized essay (4-5 paragraphs), examine the extent to which Angelou’s claim about the danger of prejudice is true or relevant today. Support your argument with reasonable, valid claims and appropriate examples from your reading, observations, or experience. ***prejudice = hating something based on ignorance *renders = makes **inaccessible = unreachable, unable to get to

Writing Portfolios Thesis answers prompt (POV) Strengths Weaknesses Thesis answers prompt (POV) Body paragraphs are organized w/ topic sentences and usually elaborated Relevant, unique evidence Precise language Grammar, punctuation, etc. The best essays (7-9) examined the prompt using a narrow focus and using evidence to articulate claims Not enough specific commentary Your informal tone (No contractions, slang, questions, calling her “Maya”) Simplistic transitions (“In conclusion,” etc.) Different forms of “Prejudice” Prejudism and prejudices are NOT real words Prejudice (singular or plural noun) People are prejudiced Ideas or comments are prejudicial Prejudice is NOT A PROPER NOUN – keep it lowercase unless it’s starting a sentence

Practice (Chart on p. 9) Imagine you are about to write a review for a movie you either love (or hate). Use SOAPS to think through the rhetorical situation of your hypothetical movie review. Be prepared to share. Example: Ms. Heitmann chooses Pulp Fiction Subject: (my main reasons why I love the movie) Occasion: I was assigned to critique a movie Audience: people who have not seen the movie Purpose: to get people to watch the movie Speaker: I have seen the movie multiple times and know Tarantino’s entire body of work

Recap Terms (Textbook p. 36-38) Rhetoric - content, style, purpose The DEJ – double-entry journal with quotes and commentary 3 Ts – Topic, Thesis, Theme Rhetorical Situation Speaker – occasion, purpose, persona Audience Subject Text Context
