Aboriginal Learning, Surrey Schools January 31, 2017 AESN Aboriginal Learning, Surrey Schools January 31, 2017

Acknowledging the Traditional Territory We recognized that we are here today to learn on the unceded, shared territories of the Coast Salish people on which our schools are located. We recognize the Katzie and Semiahmoo First Nations who have signed the Surrey Schools Aboriginal Education Enhancement Agreement and have been stewards of this land since time immemorial.

Blessing (connectedness) Protocol for learning and sharing

Intentions for the afternoon….. Introductions & Acknowledgements Overview of the AESN Inquiry Frameworks Team Planning

In your package: Proposal Submission Form 4 Key Questions template Guide to the phases of inquiry Spiral Playbook short The Brief Year at a glance – NOII/AESN

The Networks of Inquiry and Innovation (NOII) is a voluntary, inquiry-based network of schools in British Columbia, Canada.  Established in 2000 and funded by the BC Ministry of Education, the NOII is designed to improve the quality and equity of education in BC through inquiry, teamwork across roles, schools and districts, as well as a focus on applying coaching forms of assessment to assist learners to take greater ownership of their learning.  Included in the NOII are the Aboriginal Enhancement Schools Network and the Healthy Schools Network.

EVERY learner crossing the stage with dignity, purpose and options. GOALS: EVERY learner crossing the stage with dignity, purpose and options. ALL learners leaving our settings more curious than when they arrive. ALL learners gaining an understanding of, and respect for, Aboriginal knowledge and culture.

“Schools participate on an annual basis by engaging in the Spiral of Inquiry. School questions, case studies, resources and reflections are shared in a spirit of generosity, curiosity and growth.”

FOUR KEY QUESTIONS THAT MATTER A key part of the scanning and checking phases of the spiral of inquiry   Purposes: To gain deeper insights into your learners and their experiences. To get feedback from your learners regarding the extent to which they feel connected to adults within the school. To develop an understanding of the extent to which your learners own their own learning. To reflect with your colleagues on what the learners’ responses imply and the actions that you might take as a result. Advice: Start with just one or two learners. Explain to them why you are asking these questions. As necessary, adapt the wording to the age of the learner. DO NOT change the intent of the question. Record their responses verbatim. Get together shortly thereafter with your colleagues to review the responses - and the implications. Keep at it. It takes time to develop confidence and ease with these questions.

Where are you going with your learning? Can you name TWO adults in this school who believe you will be a success in life? Where are you going with your learning? How are you doing? Where to next?

Scanning What is going on for our learners? Uses the four key questions. Uses the seven learning principles of the OECD. Uses the First Peoples Principles of Learning.

Focus What is going to give you the biggest impact? Uses the information from scanning. Uses a collection of information to help inform and understand. Builds on STRENGTHS or Positives to help provide clarity to challenges. Uses common areas of inquiry.

What is leading to this decision? HUNCH What is leading to this decision? Which practices at the school may be contributing to a need for change?

New Professional Learning What do you need to learn? How will you design new learning?

What can we do differently to make enough of a difference? Taking Action (case study) What can we do differently to make enough of a difference? Learn more deeply about new ways of doing things – and then trying it out.

Are we making enough of a difference? Checking (case study) Are we making enough of a difference? How do we know?
