Elements Molecules Compounds

Atomic Connection Atoms make up all matter. The types of matter have different properties because of the differences in the atoms that make it. Atoms that are different from each other are considered elements.

Elements An element is the simplest form of a substance. Elements differ from each other based on the number of protons they have. Some matter is a pure element. This means that the matter is made up of atoms from only one type of element.

Elements Sodium (Na) Chlorine (Cl) Oxygen(O)

Molecules Sometimes atoms combine – or chemically bond together – to make new substances that have different properties than the original atoms. Any matter that can be broken down into multiple atoms chemically bonded together is called a molecule. There are two types of molecules: Element Molecules & Compound Molecules

Element Molecules Compound Molecules If the multiple atoms in a molecule consist of only one element, then it is considered an element molecule. Compound Molecules If atoms of more than one type of element are chemically bonded together to form a molecule, then it is a compound molecule.
