Bell Ringer Buffer-something that keeps two incompatible things separated. Using the definition above, why do you think Georgia was referred to as a “buffer colony”?

GEORGIA: A “DEBTOR” AND “BUFFER” COLONY Essential Question: What role did the colony of Georgia play in the development of the 13 colonies? (8.7)

The Colony of Georgia Founded in 1732 https://youtu.be/6utWkHZvtIk?t=35

James Oglethorpe Received a charter from George II to start a colony Oglethorpe chaired a committee to expose British abuses against debtors in prisons Because of Oglethorpe’s committee, many debtors were released with no support and many resorted to crime

A “Debtors” Colony Oglethorpe was granted the charter to form a new colony in the New World The purpose of this colony would be so debtors and other poor people could have a fresh start

A “Buffer” Colony Great Britain had another motive for allowing the charter Great Britain and Spain had been at war during the early 1700’s Conflicts were occurring over colonized land in the New World Georgia was strategically located between Spanish- controlled Florida and South Carolina to serve as a “buffer” or military barrier The goal was to prevent the Spanish from colonizing further

Characteristics of Georgia Oglethorpe wanted the people to be hardworking, independent, and Protestant Oglethorpe banned slavery, Catholicism, and rum Most of the population were just poor people instead of debtors Religious refugees from Germany and Switzerland settled there as well as some Jews Georgia would have the highest non-British population of the colonies

Summarizer Based on today’s lesson, what 3 words would you use to describe the colony of Georgia. You can’t use “debtor” or “buffer”. Explain your choices.

Extension Activity You are going to write an imaginary paper detailing the founding of Georgia. Therefore, you must be able to organize your information. To do so, fill in the outline provided on your note sheet.
