Electricity and Circuits Project Physics EQ: How can a structure be wired using a combination of series and parallel circuits?

Engineering Process Identify the Need Communicate and Present Research the Need Develop Possible Design Determine which Design will be the Best Design the Electrical Prototype Construct the Prototype Test and Evaluate the Prototype Complete the Project Communicate and Present

Phase 1 May 12 – Daily Grade Identify the need Research the need Purpose To understand the basics of how a home is wired using a combination of series and parallel circuits Materials & Requirements Write down the materials and people who will be bringing them Write down the requirements Structural Blue print Sketch different options of what you want to construct Barn, house, amusement park, airplane, etc. Phase 1 Identify the need Research the need Develop Possible Design(s)

Who is bringing what materials? Material due by May 16 Cardboard boxes Christmas lights Motor (manual fan, toy, any small electrical motor) Dollar stores Electrical tape Paper clips Paper fasteners Battery (square 9v) Pliers Silicone glue gun and silicone stick or glue gun and glue sticks Box cutters Props Extra materials for project decoration Students might choose to bring more sophisticated materials to complete the project such as: Wood, LED lights, Small electric switches, Electrical wire, etc.

Phase 2 May 13 – Daily grade Final sketch of your structural design Final structural blueprint Final sketch of your structural design Electrical schematic blue print Draw how you will wire and place your lights, fans, and other electrical devices 80% Review Crossword puzzle 20% Phase 2 Determine the best Structural design Design the Electrical Prototype

Construct the prototype May 16 Daily grade Construction Materials due Structure is assembled 80% Review 1-6 complete 20% Phase 3 Construct the prototype

Construct the prototype May 17 Daily grade Construction Series & lights Parallel light are set into structure 80% Review 7-12 complete 20% Phase 3 Construct the prototype

Construct the prototype May 18 Daily grade Construction Series & Parallel lights are wired 80% Review 13-18 complete 20% Phase 3 Construct the prototype

Construct the prototype May 20 Daily grade Construction Parallel and series lights and motor wired 80% Review 19-25 complete 20% Phase 3 Construct the prototype

Construct the prototype May 23 Daily grade Construction Finishing touches Review Due: Crossword puzzle 1-25 of review Phase 3 Construct the prototype

Phase 3 Project completed May 24 Daily grade Presentation Project deadline

Materials needed Cardboard boxes Christmas lights Motor (manual fan, toy, any small electrical motor) Dollar stores Electrical tape Paper clips Battery (square 9v) Pliers Silicone glue gun and silicone stick or glue gun and glue sticks Box cutters Props Extra materials for project decoration Students might choose to bring more sophisticated materials to complete the project such as: Wood, LED lights, Small electric switches, Electrical wire, etc.

Grades Phase 1 - Daily grade On time Quality Design must be clear, must be label and clean. Phase 2 – Daily grade Electrical design must be clear, must be label and clean. Phase 3 – Daily grade Requirements met

Grading criteria Project Presentation At least one motor with separate switch, wires not showing- 10 points At least three sets of lights in series ( each set with its own switch) Wires not showing – 20 points At least three lights in parallel( each set with its own switch) Wires not showing – 25 points All components are powered by one single power source – 5 points Structural integrity/creativity/decorating component (things not falling off, not crooked, well done props) – 20 points Final review complete (Turned in on time daily): 20 points

Do not show wires No Wires showing within structure…Great! BUT decorations/props are sub par (below)
