Multiplying Decimals Textbook page 120
How do we multiply by decimals? To multiply by a decimal we: multiply like we do with whole numbers then we place the decimal by counting decimal units
Example 1: Something that is 1 lb on Earth weighs 0. 17 lb on the Moon Example 1: Something that is 1 lb on Earth weighs 0.17 lb on the Moon. How much does a 3 lb flag weigh on the Moon? 3 x 0.17 0.17 *multiply x 3 * count places 0.51 We put two digits behind the decimal because the question had a total of two places behind the decimal.
Example 2: Find each product 0.2 1 unit x 0.6 1 unit 0.12 2 units (B) 0.05 x 0.9 0.05 2 units x 0.9 1 unit 0.045 3 units
Example 3: Evaluate 3x for each value of x 4.047 3 units x 3 12.141 3 units (B) x = 2.95 2.95 2 units x 3 8.85 2 units
