Federal Controlled Substance Act Most drugs are covered by the CSA. Some substances cannot be purchased or possessed by anyone, while others can be used if they have a prescription from a doctor. “Schedules”- I-V Tobacco and Alcohol are legal to possess and use in the U.S., as long as you are 18 (for tobacco) and 21 (for alcohol) There are different “Schedules” that are based on the danger of abuse and medical use.

Schedule I No accepted medical use, lack of safety even for medical use, and high potential for abuse. Cannot be purchased or possessed by anyone Marijuana Heroin Serotonin Hallucinogens (LSD) MDMA Bath Salts

Schedule II Appropriate medical use, but high potential for abuse leading to dependence. Opiates (Methadone, Morphine, Opium, Fentanyl, Codeine) Stimulants(Amphetamine/Methamphetamine)

Schedule III Potential for abuse, but less than I & II. May lead to moderate physical dependence/ high psychological dependence. Combination of products- Hydrocodone & acetaminophen Acetaminophen- pain reliever/ fever reducer

Schedule IV Low abuse potential relative to schedule III. Benzodiazepine Sedatives- Valium & Xanax Used to treat anxiety, muscle spasms, and seizures
