Student Success: How does one “switch minds” between Lower-Division Core courses? Let’s start with non-lower-division-core first… Math Proof-as-Rule (e.g., “find roots of a quadratic equation”) Writing Meaning-as-Rule (e.g., “clear, unequivocal composition”) Computer Literacy Productivity-as-Rule (e.g., “word processing efficiency”) And, of course, all General Education classes contain various theories/models/frameworks-as-Rule as well)

Student Success: How does one “switch minds” between Lower-Division Core courses? Accounting Expert Convention-as-Rule (e.g., “matching principle”) Economics Rationality-as-Rule (e.g., “comparative advantage”) Law Philosophy-as-Rule (e.g., “common law”, “torts”) Statistics Inference-as-Rule (e.g., “central limit theorem”)

Student Success: How does one “switch minds” between Lower-Division Core courses? One idea…use the course as a perspective on a theme… E.g., “Organizational Decision-making” theme Accounting perspective Informs decisions that accurately record and report transactions Economics perspective Informs decisions regarding scarce resources, including money Law perspective Informs decisions under the principles of rights, fairness, and justice Statistics perspective Informs decisions by understanding uncertainty and random chance

Student Success: How does one “switch minds” between Lower-Division Core courses? Repeat as needed…for each theme, issue, or problem Theme “Truth”, “Leadership” Issue “Budget Allocation”, “Attention Management” Problem “Time management”, “Increase target market”
