Presentation transcript:

What is the electronic structure of an atom? All pupils will be able to (Baseline): Identify elements of the periodic table by looking at their electron structures. Most pupils will be able to (Further): Represent the electronic structures of the first 20 elements in the periodic table. Some pupils will be able to (Challenge): Explain what energy levels / shells are and how this relates to their radius.

Foundation Clip (4min long) Higher clip only (5min or 8min if stopping for the examples)

If Wembley was an atom………. The tiers would be the electron shells. The nucleus would be the size of a pea on the centre spot!!!!!! The rest of the stadium would be empty like the majority of an atom is empty SPACE!!!!!!

Use your whiteboard to draw a model of: Lithium Carbon Neon Magnesium Fluorine Chlorine

Valence electrons The outer shell of electrons in an atom Only the valence shell electrons can interact with other atoms; the inner electrons are protected or “shielded” (Analogy: only your raincoat gets wet by rain water but your sweater and shirt stay dry) Determine the chemical properties of an element

What is the connection between the group number of the element and the number of valence electrons ? group number (1 - 8 system) = # valance e- 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 (skipping transition metals)

Student follow up Write a step–by-step guide explaining how to work out and draw the electron structure of an atom of the first 20 elements.

Plenary How many electrons fit in the: First Shell Second Shell Third Shell Fourth Shell Describe the connection between the number of electrons and elements position in the periodic table. Describe the connection between the number of electron shells and the position on the periodic table.
