“Thank you, M’am” By Langston Hughes Complete the Pre-Reading for Thank You, M’am” Integrity- the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness. Background Information Harlem- The outpouring of African American creativity in the early 1900’s in Harlem, New York City, signaled an important shift in American life. This cultural movement, known as the Harlem Renaissance, brought the works of many African American writers, artists, playwrights, musicians, and political thinkers new attention and respect. The artists involved in the Harlem Renaissance embraced art as a powerful tool to bring about change. They used various media to articulate and convey an honest exploration of African American life and culture.

Inferencing Readers use story clues. – They use details about what they’ve read to make an inference. 2. Readers use their own personal experiences. – They make “text to self” connections. 3. Readers use prior knowledge. – They make “text to text” connections.

Inferencing The combination of these strategies allows readers to make inferences (reasonable guesses) about characters and events.

Inferencing They... 1.Use word/text clues 2.Use picture clues 3.Define unknown words 4.Look for emotion (feelings) 5.Use what they already know 6.Look for explanations for events 7.ASK themselves questions!

Authors Imply, Readers Infer. Authors make implications that readers have to infer. What do I mean by these statements? Good Readers are Detectives who are always looking out for clues to help them better understand stories and pictures.

How does JIm feel? What story clues helped you figure out how Jim feels? What personal experience or prior knowledge helps you know how he feels?

Today... Take handouts from the back counter. Sit in your assigned seats and work independently and silently. Complete work in the following order. 1. Pre-Reading for “Thank you, M’am.” Information is also located on the PowerPoint slides in the middle of your group’s table. Do not turn these in- we will glue it in tomorrow. 2. Fill in the blank inferencing notes- the slides for them to read are in the group folders. Do not turn these in- we will glue them in tomorrow. 3. Inferencing Practice Worksheet- turn in to class’s inbox when done. 4. Work on vocabulary homework assignment (due Friday). Turn it in if you finish today. We will glue in vocabulary words tomorrow- don’t lose them! 5. If you finish everything, read your novel.
