An Experience in Global Health: Primary Care and Social Medicine in Córdoba, Argentina Tara K. Iyer1 1Medical Student, Class of 2017, Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Piscataway, NJ 08854 Rotation Description: Participated in a global health elective focusing on primary care and social medicine in Argentina Rotated in Nuevo Hospital San Roque on Internal Medicine floors and Primary Care Consult, treating low-income and immigrant patients without access to private insurance Participated in patient education, health promotion and disease prevention, and the diagnosing and treatment of acute and chronic illnesses Spent time working in the Department of Social Services assisting in hospital health promotion projects and serving as a health educator by counseling patients and community members on wellness and disease prevention strategies Attended hospital lectures focusing on the healthcare system in Argentina Participated in approximately 20 hours of language classes aimed at improving Spanish competency Location: Córdoba, Argentina Second most populous city in Argentina after Buenos Aires Population: 1.158 million Capital of Córdoba Province Home of one of the oldest universities in South America Rotation advantages: Improvement in conversational Spanish and medical Spanish Opportunity to travel and learn about Argentinian culture Ability to see the inner workings of another country’s healthcare system Healthcare System in Argentina: Healthcare in Argentina is composed of three sectors: the public sector, the mutuals or social security sector, and the private sector. The public sector is financed through taxes and supplies free clinical care for hospital inpatients and outpatients. This sector covers about 50% of the population. The social security sector, known as Obras Sociales, is financed through obligatory insurance schemes and administered by trade unions. This sector covers about 45% of the population. The private sector involves patients meet the total cost of their medical care. This sector covers about 5% of the population.
