LITERATURE REVIEW Work Based Project

LITERATURE SEARCH Identify key words Use references at end of each chapter Need adequate resources to undertake research If too much information, refine the topic

ORGANISING THE LITERATURE Theory is essential throughout the project Theory provides an understanding of the parameters of the project Theories underline assumptions that are made

RESULT OF A DETAILED LITERATURE REVIEW Student becomes better informed Better position to relate the literature to the project

REFERENCES Helps user to justify and develops statements How do you intend to use the references I.e. is it relevant to the research questions

PROBLEMS Identifying subject matter relevant to the topic Actually obtaining publication

YOU NEED TO Use literature to provide relevance and focus Identify key words that can be used in search engines as you seek literature Form a mind map Collect articles, books and papers that are relevant to the project The search is organic, for duration of a project it never stops

WHAT NOT TO DO THE MAGPIE APPROACH THE DIAMOND NECKLACE APPROACH THE ‘DRESSED TO IMPRESS’ APPROACH

THE MAGPIE APPROACH Collecting articles and books with catchy titles, in a haphazard manner

THE DIAMOND NECKLACE APPROACH Stringing together ‘gems’ of quotations from well-known authoritative authors interspersed with a few words of your own

THE ‘DRESSED TO IMPRESS’ APPROACH A long list of titles usually presented as a bibliography, which is rarely referred to in the body of the text Try and stick to a shorter list of titles, as ‘references’ which are used to support and develop the arguments in text

WRITING THE LITERATURE REVIEW Needs to be systematic and organised A diary or log is recommended Select relevant materials only Make summarised notes of key points Be critical of what you read Consider who the authors are pitching their materials for Think about the issues raised by the author Consider the plausibility of the points being raised Create a theme or structure for the literature review

CONCLUSION There will be individual tutorials to review progress of all projects Look at Athens
