T.C. Knapp Elementary Mr. Boggs’ 3rd Grade Class Week of September 17th, 2012 Dear Families, The 3rd grade students are beginning to understand the importance of homework. Remember, homework is used daily to reinforce important concepts taught within the classroom. Those students who miss 6 or more homework(s) in one grading period will be given a detention in which they must serve before school. Please remind your child to check their folder each morning before they arrive at school to ensure that they have their homework completed. Thank you! Sincerely, Mr. Boggs Reading As October approaches, we are beginning to prepare the students for their first Ohio Achievement Assessment (OAA) in reading. This week, we will teach the 3rd grade students essential strategies and skills necessary for success on the OAA in October. I will also be sending home practice stories over the next few weeks for the students to sharpen their skills. Below I have listed key concepts to remember when taking the test: (1) Look for a word bank (2) Eliminate the throw-away answer (3) Go back and RE-READ! (4) Underline key words and key information (5) Stay inside the box and on the lines (6) Check over the test Spelling The students will have their spelling test over Unit #5 on Friday, September 21st. A spelling word search will again be sent home on Monday. Please study these words throughout the week with your child. Frequently misspelled words include: (1) their (2) those (3) said (4) asked (5) often Math: We will wrap up with Chapter 2 this week in math. The students are beginning to learn how to use number bonds to add and subtract mentally. The students are also learning how to round to the nearest hundred as well as estimate answers. Finally, the students will learn how to use front-end estimation to determine whether an answer is reasonable. The students will have their math test over Chapter 2 on Friday, September 21st. IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT THE STUDENTS COMPLETE THEIR REVIEW HOMEWORK THAT WILL BE SENT HOME ON THURSDAY. Also, a guide explaining number bonds will be attached to their review homework. Please review this with your child! Their will be multiple questions on their test regarding number bonds. Social Studies: We will wrap up this week in social studies learning about map grid and eventually map scale. The students will have a brief quiz over map grid on Tuesday, September 18th. A test over map scale is scheduled for Friday, September 21st, but will most likely be pushed back until the following Monday.
