MARY ELIZABETH COUMBE Roman Bathing and Hygiene.

Hygiene for the Romans During the Roman times, they didn’t usually have a bath tub in their own houses so they would go to the public baths.

How the Romans got hot and cold water ; how the romans got hot and cold water The Romans got hot water by using a system called the hypocaust system. The Romans didn’t have piped water like we do. The aquaducts would bring water into the town and fill resivors .

The reservoir water outlets for baths The reservoirs each had three outlets. The first outlet led to the public wells for the public to use. The second outlet led to the public fountains and bath houses. The third outlet led to the houses of the rich.

The order they took baths In the morning, the women would take baths. In the afternoon, the men would usually take baths. They never took baths together. They always took separate baths.

How the romans took baths. Then they would go to the tepidarium, a steam room with heated walls and floors. They would where sandals so the floor wouldn’t burn their feet. Then they went to caldarium where they would soak in very hot water. From there they would go to the frigidarium to go in cold water to close their pores. They then went back to the unctorium to get oiled, massaged , and perfumed. After undressing and putting their clothes in cabinets, the bathers entered the unctorium. They then went to the gymnasium to exercise. Then the slaves would scrape the dirt and oil off their body.
