Madame. Jeanne Paquin (1869–1936) Matthew Robinson Fash 100

Jeanne Paquin was a French fashion designer, she is most known for her modern and innovative designs. She was the first major female couturier and a pioneer of the modern fashion business.

History & culture & society She was born in Saint-Denis, in 1869. She started her career as a dressmaker, working at the Maison Rouff. In 1891, her husband and businessman, Isidore Paquin, helped her in the opening of the House of Paquin. Madame Paquin made garments for all occasions, ranging from luxurious evening gowns to suits for daily wear, as well as functional and comfortable modern clothing. She also produced many hats. She would often blend multiple hues, and would juxtapose fabrics that had different light reflecting and shimmering qualities.

Fall 1930 1931 1935 The Chimère flapper dress was constructed from chiffon and silk. The design of this garment represented the pinnacle of French Haute Couture. Paquin’s style often crossed over to couture, which introduced lines of white ballet inspired dresses in her fashion shows. Shiny dresses made from fabrics like silk, velvet, and brocade were decorated with silk and metallic embroidery. These dresses were popular during the 1930s.

SPRING 1932 1934 1936 Paquin incorporated styles from other eras and cultures in her designs. She liked oriental designs, geometric shapes, and vivid colors. Dull black gowns and dresses were trimmed with iridescent embroidery and lace. Coats were designed to be lined with shimmering silk to brighten them, and accented with black fur trim. Paquin’s signature accent color was a brilliant pink.
