Chapter 5 Lesson 3 French and Indian War

Q1 French Trade France continued its fur trade well into North America. Both England and France made alliances with Native American fur traders. European wars between France and England would find their way to North America.

Q2 The Ohio River Valley British settlers moved into the Ohio River Valley, upsetting French fur traders. For the French, the Ohio Valley area was important to the economic security in North America. For the British, the Ohio Valley was a natural area for continued expansion.

Q3 Preparing for War A group of wealthy Virginians secured land rights to the Ohio Valley. The French were building a chain of forts to protect against the British colonists. George Washington is sent by the governor of Virginia to secure the land claims.

Q4The Start of War Washington takes a group of 150 men to the Ohio Valley. The Virginians shoot first and a French leader is killed. A French reinforcement captures Washington, but lets him go. The French and Indian War is soon underway.

Q5 A Global Conflict The French and Indian War was global, essentially fought on seven seas. The victor-England or France would emerge as THE power in North America. Eventually, France’s concern with European battles would lead to defeat in North America.

Q6 A Tough Beginning The colonists were far from unified, leading to the British decision to send troops. General Edward Braddock marched into the Ohio Valley only to be soundly defeated. Braddock’s defeat would shock the colonists and lead to questions about the British military.

Q7 Battle of Quebec William Pitt took over the British military in North America with great success. The British are able to surround Quebec at night, a French stronghold. The loss of Quebec would be the turning point of the war, as Montreal fell next.

Q8 The Treaty of Paris Spain tried to enter the war to help France, but it was far too late. The Treaty of Paris redrew North America: A) England gets all territory east of Mississippi River B) England trades Cuba and Philippines for Florida C) French no longer power in North America

Q 9 Proclamation of 1763 The British take over French forts, causing conflicts with Native Americans. The Native Americans attack English settlers, who used diseases to attack back. The Proclamation of 1763 forbids colonists to settle in the Ohio River Valley; start of colonial anger towards British.
