Bar graph Type of graph that shows the number of items in a specific category.

Example Use the bar graph to compare the total number of students surveyed to the ones who chose volley ball. Steps: Total number: 7+8+4+9= 28 Chose volleyball: 8 Compare: 28 ÷ 8 = 3.5 The number of students surveyed was 3.5 times the number that chose volleyball.

Dot plots Type of graph that shows the frequency of data with a number line. You can use a bar graph or dot plot to make part – to – whole comparisons and equivalents.

Example Steps: Total surveyed: 10 (count dots) Number who own 2 tv’s: 4 Compare: 4 10 = 2 5 2 5 of the families own tv’s The dot plot shows the number of televisions that families own. What fraction of the total families own 2 televisions? Express in simplest form.

Circle Graphs Type of graph that displays data as parts of a whole. In a circle graph, the percents add up to 100 since the entire circle represents the whole. You can solve problems, using data represented in a circle graph, including part – to - whole comparisons and equivalents.

Example Steps: Find 30% of 250 by multiplying by the decimal: 0.30 X 250 = 74 -OR- Find 30% of 250 with a proportion: 30 100 = 𝑥 250 Compare: 250-75 = 175 There were 175 more students surveyed than prefer pepperoni. A total of 250 students were surveyed. How many total students prefer pepperoni?
