The Voice of Nursing Practice Model Frontline Nurses as Change Agents: Educating and Promoting Application of the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Nurses Erica Garcia, BSN, RN, CCRN, Melissa Paule, BSN, RN, Paula-Goodman Crews, M.S.W., L.C.S.W, Anne Marie Watkins, DNP, MSHCA, RN PURPOSE Nurses encounter ethical binds that place them in conflict with their own moral values These ethical binds challenge our professional and personal integrity Ethical dilemmas in clinical practice occur in varying degrees, such as: Witnessing a consent being signed by an incapacitated patient Participating in offering CPR to a dying patient Being asked by a family member to not give necessary pain medication PROCESS 92% 6% 2% Evaluation Results The Voice of Nursing Practice Model Utilizing Existing Infrastructure KP Voice of Nursing Quality and Patient Safety Committee 1 Staff Nurse Per Unit in the Hospital (15 units) VON Fair: Ethics Booth Attendees of the Fair Survey Evaluation Themes Opportunity to learn an ethical framework to practice by Voice to promote individual & collective moral agency Moral authenticity for compassionate quality care Protected by the ANA Code of ethics when doing the right thing for the patient Nursing feeling empowered to request ethics consultation Modalities Objectives Promote ethical practice Integrate the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses from text into practice Create an infrastructure for frontline nurses to utilize during an ethical bind or moral dilemma Contribute to an ethical work environment Modality 1: Quality and Patient Safety Committee: each meeting reviewed 2 provisions followed by open discussions on the application of the provisions and dissemination Modality 2: Voice of Nursing kickoff fair, an event to promote the National Kaiser Permanente Nurse Practice Model.
