Journal Tori Brianna Veroni Taryn

Entry 1 10/7/13 Today my group and I discussed the biggest and smallest seeds we’ve seen, such as for biggest; mango and avocado seeds. And for smallest; grape, rasberry, bannana, and strawberry seeds. We also questioned the biggest and smallest seeds viewed by the mentor.

Entry 2 10/9/13 Today our group decided what we are doing for our project. We have finally decided that our project will be, “Artificial V.S. Natural light” our group also has chosen the seed in which is Buckwheat.

Entry 3 10/11/13 Today Brianna and I finished up our “wonder of seeds project” .Veronica and taryn were already done so they began logging on. We all decided as a group our research question which is : “what type of light affects plants the most, natural V.S artificial”. We also determined our hypothesis which is “ that we believe natural light will affect it the most because natural light is pure and will produce stronger UV rays than artifcial light will produce”.

Entry 4 10/16/13 Today our group is working on our research design and research ideas. We also worked on our background question. We then defined the independent and dependent variables. We separated the dependent variables between quantitative and qualitative.

Entry 5 10/22/13 Today my group and I responded to our mentor she wanted to understand more about our project and more about what we were doing. We explained to her about what kind of seeds and what kind of light to use

Entry 6 10/24/13 Today our group decided our procedures. We discussed how we would do our project and decided that we would use a Petri dish to start our growth of the seeds. We also decided where we were going to put the Petri dishes with the seeds already in them one on a window seal, and the other one in a closet with a light bulb. We also figured out all of our materials that we are going to use.

Entry 7 10/28/13 Today our group is working on our seed chamber. We put the seeds into the Petri dishes with paper towel under them, and we also soaked them in water. We then took our Petri dishes and put them into the sunlight, then we took the other Petri dish and put it under the artificial light. We labeled the seeds 1-12 and put our names on the bottom of the Petri dishes.

Entry 8 10/30/13 Today our group checked on our seeds. 7-12 has started the process of germination, on the other hand 1-6 hasn’t germinated yet. After we were done checking up on them we watered them some more and decided that the lamp shouldn’t be turned on 24 hours so when we leave school were turning the lamp on and when we enter school we will turn the lamp off. We also took some pictures of our seeds to upload them onto the website.

Entry 9 11/1/13 Today our group checked on our seeds. The seeds in the light are growing naturally, and they are really healthy. The seeds in the artificial light are not progressing, the lamp is too hot for the seeds. We tried to nurse them to see if they would start growing properly. We cant change the seeds because it will ruin the point of this project.

Entry 10 11/5/13 Today we checked on our seeds. 7-12 are ahead of the other seeds, 1-6 is barley growing because they got dried up from the artificial light. The seeds came out of their seed coats, the ones in the natural light are rapidly growing then those in the artificial light. We recorded the progress of the seeds, and we took more pictures of the seeds. we took pictures of some of the procedures we do whenever we meet and or do something new.

Entry 11 11/7/13 Today our group checked on our seeds. The seeds in the artificial light are growing slow, while the seeds in the natural light are growing rapidly. We took some new pictures of our seeds because they are starting to develop. We also started working on our procedures, and collecting our data for the day.
