Types of Development

Intellectual Development The measure of how individuals learn to think and reason for themselves in relation to the world around them. (Reference.com) Examples during pregnancy Learning about pregnancy Accepting that you are actually pregnant Examples during infancy Babies say their first words. Babies learn cause and effect like if a drop by bottle it falls. Examples during toddlerhood Toddlers start to put words together. Toddlers start pointing at different body parts and saying the correct name.

Social/Emotional Development Includes an individual's experience, expression, and management of emotions and the ability to establish positive and rewarding relationships with others (Cohen and others 2005). Examples during pregnancy Expressing emotions in appropriate ways Telling people about your pregnancy Examples during infancy How do people react when I cry How do people react when I smile Examples during toddlerhood How do people react when I through a tantrum How do people treat me when I have an accident

Physical Development Physical development involves developing control over the body, particularly muscles and physical coordination. During pregnancy all the changes to the mothers body and the growing baby are all examples of physical development. Physical development is the process that starts in human infancy and continues into late adolescent concentrating on gross and fine motor skills as well as puberty. The peak of physical development happens in childhood and is therefore a crucial time for neurological brain development and body coordination to encourage specific activities such as grasping (infancy), crawling (infancy), and walking (toddler). As a child learns what their bodies can do, they gain self confidence, promoting social and emotional development. Physical activities geared toward aiding in physical development contribute significantly to a person's health and well-being, according to the Surgeon General's report.
