QUESTIONS A lot of most conversations is made of asking and answering questions. Because of this, it is a very important part of language. But many students find it very hard to make accurate questions.

Look at the following sentence. Des watches Teletubbies. What part of speech is each word in the sentence? Des watches Teletubbies. Subject verb object

Des watches Teletubbies. Now we don’t know what Des watches so we have to ask him a question to find out. We know who the subject is, it is Des. We know the activity (verb), it is watch. We don’t know the object, so we will have to ask an object question to find out.

Object questions Do you notice anything about all the questions? Look at the object questions below. Some are present tense, some are past and some are future. What does Des watch? What do you watch? What can you do? Where do you go to school? How many brothers have you got? What did you do last night? When did you have your first English lesson? What will you eat for dinner tonight? Where will you go for your next holiday? Do you notice anything about all the questions? Now go to the next slide.

Object questions Do you notice anything now? What does Des watch? What do you watch? Where do you go to school? What can you do? How many brothers have you got? What did Bayu do last night? When did you have your first English lesson? What will they eat for dinner tonight? Where will Putu go for his next holiday? Do you notice anything now?

Quasi Object questions Qu a s i Because there are “rules” for grammar, there are often “patterns” in a language. In object questions, in present, past and future simple tenses, we can see this pattern. Quasi Qu a s i Question word auxiliary verb subject infinitive verb (V1) All object questions in all simple tenses follow this pattern

Question word aux verb subject infinitive (V1) What does Des watch? What do you watch? Where do you go? What can you do? How many brothers have you got? What did Bayu do? When did you have? What will they eat? Where will Putu go?

A.S.I Yes / No Questions Yes / No questions have the same pattern Auxiliary verb subject infinitive Do you live in Bali? Does Hernita love Guswid? Did you bring your dictionaries? Will Meri give Des chocolates for Valentines Day? Can you swim? Do they like pizza?
