Introduction to the moon phases… Demonstration using the sun, earth, and moon… Does the moon make its own light? How much of the moon is always lit? Notebook 142 .

Introduction to the moon phases… Demonstration using the sun, earth, and moon… Does the moon make its own light? How much of the moon is always lit? .

Introduction to the moon phases… At the top of NB 143, write… The half of the moon facing the sun is always lit! The moon does not make its own light. It reflects the sun’s light.

NB 144 – together using doc camera Make sure the moon is always aligned correctly with the sun! Draw what you see from Earth. USE PENCIL!

Label the phases. Add the terms waxing and waning.

Label the phases. Add the terms waxing and waning. What patterns do you notice as the moon changes from a new moon phase to a full moon phase? From full to new?

How long does it take to go from phase to phase? NB 143… Reason for Moon Phases Half of the moon is always lit, and as the moon revolves we see different parts of the lit portion. How long does it take to go from phase to phase? Since it takes about a month to go through all 8 phases, it takes 3 to 4 days to go from one phase to the next.

Pg 145: WAXING moons are getting BIGGER. We see the RIGHT side is lit. BIG IDEA! NB 145, 146 Pg 145: WAXING moons are getting BIGGER. We see the RIGHT side is lit. Pg 146: WANING moons are getting SMALLER. We see the LEFT side is lit.

Moon Phase Poster Powerpoint Clear your desk of everything but a pencil and coloring utensils. This is a 100 point day!

Use pencil only! I will give you time to “decorate” with markers/crayons at the end of class. DO NOT GLUE UNTIL TOLD in case you make mistakes.

Place name in space provided. Label the earth in the middle. Cut n Paste sheet Place name in space provided. Label the earth in the middle. The sun on the right side.

Cut out your pictures. Position them on your paper. HINT Cut out your pictures. Position them on your paper. HINT! DO NEW MOON AND FULL MOON FIRST! Wait until I tell you to glue!

Label the phases. Try not to use your book! Waxing Crescent Waning Crescent Waxing Gibbous Waning Gibbous Full Moon New Moon First Quarter Third Quarter

Draw arrows showing when the moon is waxing and when it is waning.

Add this somewhere on your poster! It takes about 28 days to go through ALL THE PHASES. It takes 3 to 4 days to go from one phase to the next.

Agenda LT: Moon phase model Lesson 4 Date: 9/28/17 Agenda LT: Moon phase model LT: I can use a model to predict and explain moon phases. Sponge: When you look at the moon, it looks different every night. Why do you think this happens?

TO do… Collect homework

Hint: Find the new moon phase first, then move counterclockwise! Moon Phase Drawing Let’s draw the moon phases when the sun is drawn on the left versus on the right. Label all the phases with their complete names! Word bank: New moon, Full moon, Waning Crescent, Waxing crescent, Waning gibbous, Waxing gibbous Hint: Find the new moon phase first, then move counterclockwise!

Making Meaning NB 152 - 154 Work with your group to answer the questions as best you can. You do NOT have to do them in order. We will discuss them together!

Making Meaning Answer Key. 1. Half of the moon is always lit. As it revolves, we see different parts of the lit portion.

Making Meaning Answer Key. 2. It takes one month (27.32 days) to go through all the phases. It takes 3 to 4 days per phase.

Making Meaning Answer Key. 3. The moon can be visible in the day or night – it just depends on where it is in its orbit around the earth!

Making Meaning Answer Key. 4. Everyone sees basically the same phase. It doesn’t move quickly enough for areas to see different phases.

Making Meaning Answer Key. 5. The side of the moon that is in the moon’s shadow changes every night.

Making Meaning Answer Key. 6. When the lit portion of a moon is getting bigger, its waxing. When the lit portion of the moon is getting smaller, its waning.

Note to teacher… Do as many of the questions for candy as time allows and then do the Performance Assessment.

Performance Assessment 1. What phase it this? GIVE THE FULL NAME! 2. Is it waxing or waning?

Performance Assessment 3. A _____________ moon is getting smaller. Choose waxing or waning. It takes one week to go from phase to the next. True or false?
