Is good ethics good business? Learning objective: To consider whether acting in a good way is the same as a good business decision Key Words

Is business ethics just hypocritical window dressing?

Does it matter if we only buy products with moral ‘selling points’ to satisfy our desire to feel better when gratifying our desire to consume more?

Assess the view that utilitarianism provides the best approach to business ethics (40 marks)

p.265 Read from the bottom of 265 – top 266 Half the class will create cases that suggest the 5 cases are examples of good ethics and good business. The other half will create a case to suggest they are good ethics but bad business. Write down the reasons you come up with for each case

After you have discussed each case, decide which side wins After you have discussed each case, decide which side wins. Is it good ethics and good business or good ethics but bad business?

Read 268-269 1. Summarise the Kantian and utilitarian approaches to the idea that good ethics is good business. 2. Which theory do you think fits better with business decision making and why? 3.
