These are stunning, but ... what’s missing?

In my experience… Advanced camera settings make it easy to take technically “good” photos BUT… They don’t teach students how to capture the humanity of a story

CAPTURE A MOMENT A good photo must: tell me a story get me thinking trigger my emotions motivate me to act make me wonder CAPTURE A MOMENT

Let’s review: Does this photo… tell me a story? get me thinking? trigger my emotions? motivate me to act? make me wonder? (Creative Commons: ForestWander Nature Photography)

What makes photojournalism “good”? Both this… And this... composition exposure lighting emotion tell me a story get me thinking trigger my emotions motivate me to act make me wonder

Hierarchy of Image “Energy” (Joseph Elbert, The Washington Post) Intimate Emotionally appealing Graphically appealing Informational Highest form of photojournalism. Difficult to describe, but readers and photographers can “feel” the intimacy of the situation. Capture the right moment and force a reader to interact emotionally. Pictures are visually pretty and interesting to look at, but don’t connect to viewer’s emotions Lowest standard. Overall view of a news event.
