Becoming a monk or nun

Becoming a monk or nun People who devoted their lives to God became monk and nuns. They had to promise to be poor, never marry and to be obedient. They also had to work very hard. When not working they had to pray. Many monasteries and convents were also silent – they could not speak! Watch this clip!

Can you mime the job? Copying out books. Digging on the farm. Praying. Helping the sick. Cooking. Looking after the sheep on the farm. Planting the vegetables. Reading the Bible.
