A Dream Within a Dream Edgar Allan Poe 1809-1849 STANZA 1 Take this kiss upon the brow! And, in parting from you now, Thus much let me avow — You are not wrong, who deem That my days have been a dream; Yet if hope has flown away In a night, or in a day, In a vision, or in none, Is it therefore the less gone? All that we see or seem Is but a dream within a dream. STANZA 2 I stand amid the roar Of a surf-tormented shore, And I hold within my hand Grains of the golden sand — How few! yet how they creep Through my fingers to the deep, While I weep — while I weep! O God! can I not grasp Them with a tighter clasp? O God! can I not save One from the pitiless wave? Is all that we see or seem But a dream within a dream?

Form––Free verse Structure of Poem: Two stanzas The two stanzas are of different lengths (the first is 11 lines, the second is 13 lines) Rhyme Scheme: a,a,a,b,b ,c,c,d,d,b,b e,e,f,f,g,g,g,h,h,i,i,b,b.

Rhyme Scheme: a,a,a,b,b ,c,c,d,d,b,b e,e,f,f,g,g,g,h,h,i,i,b,b. STANZA 1 Take this kiss upon the brow! And, in parting from you now, Thus much let me avow — You are not wrong, who deem That my days have been a dream; Yet if hope has flown away In a night, or in a day, In a vision, or in none, Is it therefore the less gone? Poetic Techniques and devices Repetition Assonance You are not wrong, who deem That my days have been a dream; All that we see or seem Is but a dream within a dream. While I weep–while I weep In a night or in a day In a vision or in none While I weep- while I weep! O God! can I not grasp O God! can I not save

Poetic Techniques and devices Alliteration You are not wrong, who deem That my days have been a dream; All that we see or seem Is but a dream within a dream. And I hold within my hand Grains of golden sand– While I weep–while I weep Personification I stand amid the roar Of a surf-tormented shore Imagery In a night, or in a day, In a vision, or in none

Meaning of the Poem “All that we see or seem Is but a dream within a dream. I stand amid the roar Of a surf-tormented shore, And I hold within my hand Grains of the golden sand-- How few! yet how they creep Through my fingers to the deep, While I weep--while I weep!” The ‘Golden sand’ and the ‘Grains’ like the things that happened in our life, which means those are insubstantial as a dream, easy come, easy go. For this world the life is like a tiny sand, but how you see the world that is how big dream you have.
