Benefits of Higher Education

You are going to watch a video about the benefits of Higher Education

In the video, we heard that moving away to university is like creating a “home from home". Imagine you are 18 years old and sharing a house with other students. Between you, you must cook, clean, tidy and pay the bills. Turn to Resource 2.1 What would be your "house rules"? (Always… Never….) Write your list of do’s and don’ts. What three items would you bring to remind you of home?

Turn to Resource 2.2 Job or career What’s the difference? A job is something you do short-term just to earn money, whereas a career is a long-term pursuit of an ambition. A career is usually in an area of work you find interesting or are passionate about. Turn to Resource 2.2 Fill in the gaps Answer the question: in what ways is a career like climbing a ladder? Why do you think connections and contacts are important in a career but not a job?

What are the pros and cons of each type of subject? Vocational subjects help you to develop practical skills and knowledge to prepare you to do a specific job. Academic subjects help you to develop knowledge and skills in a subject which is not related to any specific job (but you can still apply those skills to lots of different jobs!) Turn to Resource 2.3 Circle the vocational subjects Underline the academic subjects. What are the pros and cons of each type of subject?

Look at the job sectors on Resource 2.4 A job sector is the name for an area of work. Lots of different jobs can belong to the same job sector or category. Get ready to explain your answers! Look at the job sectors on Resource 2.4 Which three job sectors appeal to you the most? Circle them. Which three job sectors appeal to you the least? Cross them out.
