Review of Mean, Median, Mode Range, Box Plots, Dot Plots and Histograms

Warm Up Find the linear equation that passes through the following points: (3,4) (5,8)

Objective The student will be able to find the mean, median, mode and range of a set of data and create a box and whisker, histogram and dot plot.

Try with a Partner Find the Mean, Median, Mode, and Range of the following set of data: 80, 81, 79, 100, 87, 91, 99, 100, 95, 92, 93, 97

Finding Mean, Median, Mode and Range Mean: is the average of a set of data Median: is the middle number after ordering the data from least to greatest. Mode: Is the most common number in a set of data. Range: How “far” the data spreads.

Continued… Find the Mean, Median, Mode and Range of the following: 10, 9, 7, 10, 8, 6, 5, 9, 9

With a Partner Create a Histogram with the following set of data: 25 15 28 52 22 38 42 44 24 32 19 28 29 20 31

Histograms Are Similar to Bar Graphs but have a few important differences: They do not have gaps between sets of data Data on the x-axis is grouped into ranges. The y-axis represents frequency the data on the x- axis appears

Continued

With A Partner Create a Dot Plot with the following data:

Dot Plots Dot Plots graphically represent data frequency using dots or x’s. x-axis: shows categories of data y-axis: shows frequency.

Continued

With a Partner Create a Box and Whisker Plot from the following data: 12, 9, 10, 15, 19, 20, 17, 19, 14, 19

Box and Whisker Plots Vocabulary: Quartile: one fourth or one quarter of the data. Extreme: the value that is far from the rest of the data. The largest and smallest value.

Continued

Continued Steps to make a Box and Whisker: Order and organize the data. Find the extremes. Find the median. Find the quartiles. Use the information to create the plot.

Exit ticket and Homework Find the mean, median, mode and range of the following: 10, 10, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9 Homework: Worksheet.
