protists Notes # 4
Kingdom: Protista The kingdom Protista gets the ‘leftover’ type of cells and organisms that don’t fit easily into other kingdoms. This Kingdom has a lot of variety, but most protists have 3 things in common: 1. unicellular 2. are Eukaryotes ( have a nucleus and other organelles) Live in moist, watery environments
Protists shape and structure Protists are classified by the way they move and gather food
Group 1: Pseudopods Pseudopods use their ‘false foot’ extension to propel the organism and to engulf food Pseudo-means false or fake Pod-means foot Example: Amoeba
Group 2: Ciliates Ciliates use cilia – tiny hair like projections that move in a wave pattern, like oars in a rowboat. Example: Paramecium
Paramecium
Group 3: Flagellates: use a flagellum, long whip-like tail to move Example: Euglena
