ELDERS Elders Their Qualifications

Elders, their qualifications. LESSON 9 Elders, their qualifications. Why Are The Qualifications So Important? Because God inspired them and directed us to use them. They are not random. Because they say something about the character of the men God wants to lead us. Because they say something about the man's love for God and his dependence on Him. Because they speak to the respect of the man in order for others to more easily follow him. Because he will serve in our Lord's church. Because he is accountable first to God.

Biblical Qualifications to be an Elder/Overseer/Shepherd

Hebrews 13:7  Remember those who rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct.

Hebrews 13:17  17 Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.

Even though Hebrews 13:7 and 13:17 do not use the specific terms of "elder", they certainly apply. However, the understanding of two other words in Hebrews 13:17 is key to grasping the depth or gravity of the qualifications God has given.

Obey SCARY Submissive

WE MUST DO THIS SCRIPTURALLY

A Biblical Eldership In every congregation – a plural number appointed (never just one) Each congregation was autonomous Paul appointed elders “in every church” Acts 14:23

Biblical Terms for Elders “Elders” (“presbuteros”, presbyters) for they were mature Christian men Acts 14:23 So when they had appointed elders in every church, and prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord in whom they had believed.

Biblical Terms for Elders “Elders” (“presbuteros”, presbyters) for they were mature men “Bishops” (“episkopos”, overseers) for their task was to oversee the congregation. Acts 20:28- Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.

Biblical Terms for Elders “Elders” (“presbuteros”, presbyters) for they were mature men “Bishops” (“episkopos”, overseers) for their task was to oversee the congregation. “Pastors” (“poimen”, shepherds) for their task was to shepherd and feed the flock of God. Acts 20:17, 28; 1 Peter 5:1-2

Not three distinct offices, but different ways to describe the same men and their work.

Qualification of Elders 1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9 1 Timothy 3:1-7 (NKJV) 1  This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work. 2  A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach; 3  not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous; 4  one who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence 5  (for if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?); 6  not a novice, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation as the devil. 7  Moreover he must have a good testimony among those who are outside, lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

Qualification of Elders 1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9 Titus 1:5-9 (NKJV) 5  For this reason I left you in Crete, that you should set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint elders in every city as I commanded you-- 6  if a man is blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of dissipation or insubordination. 7  For a bishop must be blameless, as a steward of God, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, 8  but hospitable, a lover of what is good, sober-minded, just, holy, self-controlled, 9  holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict.
