OneNote and the "Class" Notebook MVUSD Professional Development Jacob Johnson Solomon Petchers

Objectives Become familiar with OneNote. Set up a Class Notebook. Become familiar with the ‘’Class” Notebook add-in.

What is OneNote? OneNote is a Microsoft application, similar to Word and PowerPoint. OneNote is a digital binder/notebook. Notebooks are organized into tabs and pages.

What makes a notebook, a “Class” Notebook? It is a teacher created and controlled notebook that the students have access to. There are two access permissions for students: view only and edit. Students can only edit in the “Collaboration Space.” Note: A “Class” Notebook can only be created in Office 365.

Notebook Practice (15-20 min) Becoming familiar with OneNote In the search bar, at the bottom left, type ‘onenote 2016’ and open OneNote. Create a Notebook to practice.

Notebook Practice (15-20 min) Try these tasks: Create a to-do list. Type some text and insert a hyperlink into some words. Find a file (your own or one off the internet) and place it on a page. Create a page with rule lines and background color. Create a page with text and images and email it. Discover a feature? Share it with others!

Creating the “Class” Notebook Open the Chrome internet browser and go to the Murrieta Valley High School home page. Click on the Office 365 link and log in. Go to the “Class Notebook” tile. Click on “Create a class notebook.”

Creating the “Class” Notebook Name the Notebook. Notice the area section groups and their descriptions. Click ‘next’ on the bottom right.

Creating the “Class” Notebook Adding teachers You can always add other teachers later if you choose, this is optional. Note: when you ‘Add Another Teacher’ they will have the same editing permissions as you. You can always add other teachers in the student area if they just need ‘view only’ access.

Creating the “Class” Notebook Adding students You can always add students later. For demonstration, we will add a few students to see what the Notebook looks like with student notebooks.

Creating the “Class” Notebook Adding students Add these three students. You can add by name or student ID. Patricia Stickles – 420000619 Garrett Rackstraw – 956020183 Kylie Hejnicki – 956025864 Note: The end of this presentation will show how to quickly add students.

Creating the “Class” Notebook Designing Student Spaces These will be the ‘tabs’ in your students’ Notebooks. You can always add more sections later. Note: You cannot remove a space (tab) once it has been created. It might be helpful to start with one or two spaces and add as you go.

Creating the “Class” Notebook Previews This gives you an idea of how the Notebook will look for you and how it will look for the students.

Creating the “Class” Notebook Final Steps Click ‘Create’ and wait a few moments for it to finish setting up.

Creating the “Class” Notebook Final Steps When the final screen appears there are several options. We want to open our Notebook to make sure it finished setting up. Later, we will download the ‘add-in’ as it is an important part to using the Class Notebook. Click ‘Open in OneNote’ Note: Similar to Word and PowerPoint, OneNote can be worked on through Office 365 and/or the Office software on your computer.

What is the ‘Class Notebook Add-in’? The Class Notebook Add-in is a tool that allows the teacher to efficiently interact with students’ notebooks by distributing and reviewing content. Note: the add-in must installed on every computer you plan on using the Class Notebook with. This feature is not available through Office 365.

Download the ‘Class Notebook Add-in’ Log in to your Office 365 and click on the Class Notebook icon. Below the managing options, click on ‘Download the Class Notebook Add-in.’ Follow the download/install directions. Note: You will have to close OneNote on your computer for the installation to finish.
