EXPEDITION EARTH CLIL SCIENCE LESSON 5th class PESCAIOLA PRIMARY SCHOOL I.C. PIERO DELLA FRANCESCA AREZZO 4th class INDICATORE PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHERS: MONICA GIAMBONI CHIARA GIUSTINI

AIM This module is an ideal way to introduce children to concepts such as classification, the relationships between species and the key characteristics of common animals. Children can build up learners’ language skills and knowledge of the animal Kingdom. In each lesson, children can find out about different aspects of the animal world and produce a piece of work.

Content: Students will be able to: Classify animals (mammals, reptiles, anphibians, fish, birds) Identify and describe key features of animals in each group Identify and describe key features of animal habitats Understand ways in which animals are adapted to live in their habitat Understand ways in which animals adapt to winter condition Review previous content

Communication: Listen to instructions Speak and interact orally in a communicative situation Talk about animals Establish dialogues with peers and teachers using vocabulary learned to describe animals

Cognition: Recognize and name animals Identify animals and their characteristics Classify and compare animals Describe and explain animals features Identify and describe animals habitats Compare animals behaviours Identify cause and effect Create a fantasy animal combining different features Justify their choices Appreciate the English language as a mean of communication

Culture: Discover the value of have respect for animals Write an email to WWF asking to experts for help in order to have information and materials about animal Doing an internet research for animal Present the research to other school classes Visit a local zoo or using the interactive board to virtually enter in world’s national park Visit “Museo Fauna Selvatica” in Arezzo

How to classify animals What animals do in winter? Animal habitats EXPEDITION EARTH How to classify animals What animals do in winter? Animal habitats Animal adaptation

Unit 1: animal classification

Warmer Colourful pictures, songs, videos will be shown to children to introduce the content and to elicit the name of the animals.(click on the picture to watch and listen)

Step 1 Animal picture worksheet to each group. Ask the children to cut out the cards and to arrange them on their desks into groups using a feature that the animals have in common. Check the work of the groups and ask to explain the criteria they have used, e.g. they haven’t got legs, they live in water and on land…

Step 2 Posters describing the six classes of animals will be stuck on the board. Each group have to look for animals cards that belong to each class and then stick them to the corresponding poster.

Step 3 Children complete individually a yes-no table about animal groups. In groups they use the answers to the previous acvtivity to write a short description of the animal group they have chosen.

Step 4 Animal Mini-book Instructions To put the mini-book together, simply cut out the boxes for each animal and stack then in ascending size order so that they cascade like a waterfall book.  Staple along top edges and adhere back page to your group.

Unit 2: What animals do in the winter?

Warmer: revision activity Play the “Animal Classification Game”

Step 1 Step 2 Students watch the video “Winter adaptations” Pre and post activities to check comprehension Step 2 Children work in pairs and complete worksheets about hibernation and migration

Step 3 Students work in groups and draw a mind map showing different animal behaviours in the winter. Each group presents its outcome, then discuss with the other groups until they agree on a class outcome. Work in progress…

The outcome: in the winter

Lesson 3: animals habitats grassland rainforest desert arctic

Warmer: revision activity The teacher describes an animal and encourages the children to guess which one it is. (Include colour, size (big/small), parts of the body and what they can do.) Presentation of different habitats: pictures of deserts, the Arctic, the Ocean….

Step 1 Class discussion about where animals live. Elicite habitats names : Desert Rainforest The Arctic Grassland In a world map children colour the habitats we focused on and stick animal pictures next to them.

Step 2 Web game: answer questions about animals habitat. Web game: in Bild a biome you can create six of the world biomes choosing plants, animals climate

Step 3 Group work Each group produces a mini-book about desert or the Arctic

Lesson 3: animal adaptations

Warmer: revision activity Each student produces a description including informations about the animal group, its habitat and its diet (herbivore, carnivore, ominivore).

Step 1 Students watch a ppt presentation about animal adaptations. Then complete worksheets to check the comprehension Camouflage (use of color in a surrounding) The chameleon can change its color to match its surroundings.

Step 2 Groups work: students complete the Animal quiz in teams, then each team checks the answers and counts its points. To make friends with other camels! Why do camels have long eyelashes? NO! To protect their eyes in sand storm!

Step 3 Web activity: Switch Zoo Children will create a new animal mixing different animal features. They will choose a name for their creation and write a simple description.
