The Start 15th century Portuguese exploration of Africa is commonly regarded the beginning of European colonialism.

France in Caribbean Saint Domingue (Haiti) the most important About 500,000 slaves there in 1789 Provided labor for sugar, coffee, and cotton plantations.

France in Americas New France, or Canada Find little valuable metals. Fish, valuable furs. Didn’t enslave Native Americans, only trade. (Hunters)

Spanish colonies in Americas First country to successfully settle in Americas. Mainly mining gold and silver. Sugar production in Brazil. Commercial Agriculture.

Great Britain in India East India Company Jewel in Britain’s crown Export raw material such as cotton, jewels, tea, and spice.

Scramble for Africa

France in West Africa Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Benin, Guinea, Ivory Coast Grew cash crops such as cotton, groundnuts. Ivory and gold.

Great Britain in South Africa 1800s British took over the Cape Area Export diamond and gold to England

European influence in East Africa 1500s Portugal built 1st European forts in East Africa. 1800s European powers such as Great Britain, Spain, France scramble territory in the region. Mainly mining. (most profit) Cash crops include coffee, cotton, tea, and sisal(durable plant fiber for rope and twine).

Colonial Africa

What relates to Candide Slavery is depicted the worst. Candide’s talk with the slave was humorless. Caused Candide to give up his optimism.
