Lab Instruments “All the world is a laboratory for the inquiring mind”
Why is Important to Understand how to Use Instruments? SAFETY! ACCURACY!
Lab Etiquette Remain at your station unless you are getting supplies or help “Ask three then me” Record data as you go Leave the space as you found it Get checked out
METER STICK
Meter Stick Units – Meters When to use - When measuring the length of larger objects
Beaker
Beaker Used to measure the VOLUME of liquids Measured in ML Volume = how much space a substance takes up
Erlenmeyer Flask
Erlenmeyer Flask Similar to a beaker, but better for mixing liquids (units are ml, and also measures vol.) Can put a stopper in it
Graduated Cylinder
Graduated Cylinder The most accurate way to measure the volume of liquids Units = ml Read from the meniscus
What on Earth is a Meniscus? Always read the ml from the bottom of the curve of the water :
Test Tube
Test Tube Used for reactions during experiments Holds liquid after it has already been measured Clean at the end of the lab
Pipette

Triple Beam Balance Used to weigh solids Unit - grams
Timers Start, stop, lap, reset Units – seconds and minutes Round to two decimals
Thermometer Measure in degrees Celcius Do not press against the glass Allow time to settle
Goggles Wear when dealing with chemicals Keep them on when instructed
Microscope Very important in life science! Always carry with two hands
