Ch.1-1 What is… Chemistry

Chemistry is the study of the composition of matter and the changes that matter undergoes Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space

Brief history: Alchemists developed tools & techniques for working with chemicals Antoine Lavoisier (1743 – 1794) shifted chemistry from a science of observation to one of measurement
