Discuss in your group: How do authors use the narrative techniques of DIALOGUE and DESCRIPTION to develop characters and events in their story?

Today you will learn how authors use the narrative techniques of DIALOGUE and DESCRIPTION to develop characters and events in their story.

Dialogue: Tells the reader what is happening Can be easier to read than large blocks of description Helps the reader better understand the characters’ thoughts and emotions Helps move the plot along

Description: Shows the reader what is happening Creates a sense of atmosphere, mood, suspense, and emotion to hook the reader Creates a richer reading experience

Purpose for reading: Find examples where the author uses large sections of dialogue. What is the purpose? Find examples where the author uses large sections of description. What is the purpose?

Today you will learn how to use the narrative technique of DIALOGUE to develop characters and events in your story.

Skip the meet and greet.

Dialogue must move the plot. Meg and I were in the woods, but not too far out, just close enough to the house so we wouldn’t get lost. That was until Meg decided that it would be fun to go on a adventure, “let’s go further into the woods” Meg suggested. “I don’t think that’s a good idea” I answered, the truth is I was terrified of the woods. “Come on it’ll be fun.” She said clearly oblivious to the fact that I was scared. “no” I stated, not in the mood for arguing. “Come on or are you scared.” she taunted. “fine” I sighed. “Yea” Meg cheered. So we went inside, got four bottles of water, some granola bars, and fruit. Soon we were lost, and I was terrified. “Meg do you know where we are”? I questioned. “Uh...uh....yea?” she said well it came out like more of a question. “Great, just great” I said sarcastically Dialogue must move the plot.

A line anyone could say is a line no one should say.

Authentic dialogue: things that only apply to the people involved. lizz@lvvq "thats a horse, not a monkey" "whats the difference? they both have people teeth" #bffs elin@elinlowri 'The thing is, Sharon - you know me, I've never been able to resist cheese, even at a funeral, but this was something else' #familyprobs Brian ‏@bsumwalt "You don't know the history of that donut.” #insidejokes

Dialogue Tips Skip the meet and greet. Dialogue must move the plot. A line anyone could say is a line no one should say. Writing authentic dialogue requires eavesdropping.
