WADA’s appeal for increased funding WADA Media Symposium Francesco Ricci Bitti, Chair, WADA Finance and Administration Committee 20 June 2016, London, United Kingdom

How WADA is funded WADA’s funding is sourced equally from the Olympic Movement (IOC) and governments of the world Once governments make their contributions, the IOC matches dollar for dollar

2015 Contributions from the IOC and Governments

Public Sector Contributions by Region Government contributions by region (Invoiced and remitted as of 31 December 2015 for budget year 2015) Name of presentation

WADA’s annual budget vs. earnings of Tiger Woods Food for thought… Source: About Sports

What’s being done to secure extra funding… End-2013: IOC-WADA initiated Anti-Doping Research Fund The IOC pledged to match up to $10 million towards athlete-centred anti-doping research Governments contributed $6 million, which the IOC matched for a total of $12 million, which has been put towards innovative science and social science research End-2015, WADA initiated Investigations Fund Following the IC Report, Sir Craig Reedie wrote to governments to ask for additional contributions toward further investigations This has realized approximately $650,000 from Governments, which the IOC will be asked to match

What’s being done to secure extra funding…(cont.) Early 2016: Sir Craig Reedie called on sponsors and broadcasters to fund clean sport Sport market consists of sponsorships, gate revenues, media rights (which includes broadcast television) and merchandising Conservative 2015 estimate places value at $145 billion* Broadcasters: 0.5% tariff on the estimated $35 billion* annual media rights figure would put $175 million more in WADA’s coffers  Sponsors: Organizations that sponsor sanctioned athletes could attribute the money to the anti-doping movement instead (Source: Figures sourced from PWC Outlook for the global sports market to 2015)

What’s being done to secure extra funding… (cont.) We are also exploring creation of a private charitable foundation Dedicated to supporting anti-doping on a global scale Grants could finance areas such as: Scientific research Values-based education Intelligence and Investigations

Thank you!
