Post Exam Student Reflection Aaron Warnock

Post Exam Student Reflection – Partial Credit Reflection Why Partial Credit Reflection (PCRs)? How do PCRs work? Examples of good student work in PCRs as well as student training required. Your chance to run a sample PCR from start to finish. Student feedback throughout Questions?

Why Partial Credit Reflection? April 2005 – Pat Averbeck of Edmonds CC at MAA Used PCRs for a decade, both in the classroom and online. Fall 2014 – Highline’s participation in the Consortium to Promote Reflection in Engineering Education (CPREE) grant through the University of Washington. I was tired of students looking at their 73% on an exam and shoving it in their bag with a shrug, never to be looked at again.

Student Feedback Student Evaluations Comment “One of the most helpful things were the Partial Credit Requests [reflection]. They allowed me to review my test to figure out and understand what I did incorrectly, helping me to use my tests not only as a way of tracking my progress, but also as a learning tool.”

How do PCRs work? Grade Exams Return Exam to students Only mark right or wrong No Partial Credit is given No “corrections” made Return Exam to students Answers provided (not solutions) PCR Instructions Copy if possible, keep original Students Identify their errors Written in words NOT test “corrections” Not their answer but their WORK Re-grade Exams with PCRs Grades still based on original work PC given based on error correctly identified

Student Feedback “PCR’s are a nice twist when it comes to learning from mistakes. I liked them!” “I like that he had us re do the questions we missed on the test. It made us understand where we went wrong so as to not do it again (hopefully) :)”

More Details How do PCRs work? Training Students – corrections vs. identifying errors Grade Inflation? Classroom vs. Online Consequences for not completing PCR What classes for PCR?

Student Feedback Verbal Comment from a student at the end of the quarter: “What if my next teacher doesn’t give us the opportunity for Partial Credit Requests!?!” My Response: “They’re going to give you partial credit for free! Keep using this method though to review your errors and learn from them.”

Student Feedback Unhappy Student “I would eliminate the Partial Credit Request we had to complete for each exam. If we did not go through our graded exam and explain the errors we made for each wrong answer, we would receive 0% on our exam grade. Perhaps this assignment could be beneficial to some and be offered as an optional assignment to boost a grade, but requiring it for a simple error that doesn’t need explanation is frustrating and a waste of time.”

Student Feedback “Making the partial credit requests a requirement helped me check my work and better understand my mistakes so I can prevent them later on.” “By making the PCR a part of the testing requirement it allowed me to re-try problems I’d missed and earn extra credit, rather than simply telling me what I’d gotten wrong, I got the chance to see what I’d gotten wrong, correct it and improve my score.” REQUIREMENT “check work” and “better understand my mistakes” “Extra Credit” and “improve my score”

Training Students – Not test corrections! Original Exam Work PCR Submission No words = No credit

Training Students – Use the posted solutions! Original Exam Work Answer PCR Submission

Training Students – Not reflective! Original Exam Work Answer PCR Submission

Reflection shows lack of understanding Original Exam Work PCR Submission Instructor Feedback

Training Students – Not nearly specific enough Original Exam Work PCR Submission Instructor Feedback Answer

Training Students – Close, but not complete Original Exam Work Answer PCR Submission

Now it is your turn to try it out! Grade Exam Only mark right or wrong Give no Partial Credit Give no “corrections” Return copy of Exam to the student along with answer key. Student completes the PCR, and submits it to you. Questions Marked Wrong: 5, 6, 9, 10, 13, 14, 22c, 22d

Now it is your turn to try it out! Re-grade Exam with PCR Only need to re-grade incorrect answers Score based on original work on test error correctly identified (Scoring Note) Most questions on this test are worth 4 points. A few are worth 3 or 5 depending on the difficulty (if you want to have a basis for comparing scores with the people around you). Thoughts or reactions now that you’ve tried it?
