Presentation transcript:

L/O: To explore the use and significance of symbols in worship. Start Thinking: 1. What do you understand from each symbol shown above? 2. How would you redesign one of the symbols above to make it more effective in conveying the meaning of what is represents? 3. Why do people use symbols instead of words? Which do you think is more effective?

Keyword: Symbols are images that instantly convey a message or meaning to those who are familiar with them.

Symbols and Symbolism Student Booklet Tasks Do you recognise and/or know the meaning of any of these symbols?

Explain how Christians might use symbols to express belief.

L/O: To explore the contention that symbols are more effective than words. In groups, you must create either a role-play or a montage presentation under the title: “Symbols are more effective than words.” Your work should include several different reasons why symbols are more effective. Ideas: link to emotions (eg colours), no language barriers, easier to express the religious and spiritual than explain it, more memorable, develop a personal relationship through own interpretations, use of all our senses (eg smell, touch, sight etc), power of non-religious symbols in the world. You could act out different scenes of a symbol(s) in action eg. use of crucifix, water, etc.
