Radicals and Rational Exponents

Rational Exponents Use your calculator to evaluate the following: Summary: When you have a rational exponent, the denominator acts as the index of a radical.

What about x4/3 ? We can rewrite x4/3 as or As a group, complete problems 1-11 on your worksheet by rewriting each rational exponent as a radical expression. Then apply your knowledge to evaluate the following three examples.

From Radical to Rational Exponent Now, reverse the rule you developed to change radical expressions into rational exponential expressions. Try problems 13 through 18.

Earlier in this unit, you learned that when the index is different, you can’t multiply or divide radicals. When you change them to exponential expressions, you can simplify! First rewrite each expression in exponential form. Then, simplify and write your final answer in simplest radical form.

Practice Complete the final table on your worksheet.
