The Importance of Fellowship Refuse to fellowship those we should Extend fellowship to those we should not (3 John 9-11) (2 John 9-11)

What Is Biblical Fellowship? Review What Is Biblical Fellowship? The Meaning of Fellowship The Direction of Fellowship The Use of Fellowship The Conclusions about Fellowship

Review 2 Corinthians 6:14–17 14 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? 15 And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? 16 And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will dwell in them And walk among them. I will be their God, And they shall be My people.” 17 Therefore “Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you.” Common Work Share in Action koinonia Harmony of thought A part together with others A union of purpose Thus: Agreement in principle leading to joint or common action in spiritual work

The Context Theme of 2 John: “Walking in Truth” John’s Emphasis on Abiding in Truth Outline of the book 2 John 9 – Summary of all that is in 1, 2, 3 John

Summary of all of 1, 2, 3 John 2 John 9 7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world who do not confess Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. 8 Look to yourselves, that we do not lose those things we worked for, but that we may receive a full reward. 1 The Elder, To the elect lady and her children, whom I love in truth, and not only I, but also all those who have known the truth, 2 because of the truth which abides in us and will be with us forever: 9 Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him; 11 for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds. 3 Grace, mercy, and peace will be with you from God the Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love. 4 I rejoiced greatly that I have found some of your children walking in truth, as we received commandment from the Father. 5 And now I plead with you, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment to you, but that which we have had from the beginning: that we love one another. 6 This is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, that as you have heard from the beginning, you should walk in it. 12 Having many things to write to you, I did not wish to do so with paper and ink; but I hope to come to you and speak face to face, that our joy may be full. 13 The children of your elect sister greet you. Amen. Summary of all of 1, 2, 3 John 9 Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. 2 John 9 “..a golden text, a New Testament jewel against the progressives, who seek to reinterpret or go beyond the faith once for all delivered to the saints.” B. Do Not Receive Him (2 John 9-11) The Context The Doctrine

2 John 9–11 9 Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him; 11 for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds.

The Doctrine “Doctrine” = revealed truth

2 John 1 The Elder, To the elect lady and her children, whom I love in truth, and not only I, but also all those who have known the truth, 2 because of the truth which abides in us and will be with us forever: 3 Grace, mercy, and peace will be with you from God the Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love. 4 I rejoiced greatly that I have found some of your children walking in truth, as we received commandment from the Father.

2 John 5 And now I plead with you, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment to you, but that which we have had from the beginning: that we love one another. 6 This is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, that as you have heard from the beginning, you should walk in it. 7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world who do not confess Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. 8 Look to yourselves, that we do not lose those things we worked for, but that we may receive a full reward.

2 John 9 Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him; 11 for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds. 12 Having many things to write to you, I did not wish to do so with paper and ink; but I hope to come to you and speak face to face, that our joy may be full. 13 The children of your elect sister greet you. Amen.

The Doctrine “Doctrine” = revealed truth Argument: “Doctrine of Christ” = about Christ

* Thus – broader fellowship – Unity in diversity Argument: “Doctrine of Christ” = Doctrine about Christ, not doctrine he taught * Thus – broader fellowship – Unity in diversity Doctrine of Pharisees (Matt. 16:12) Doctrine of Balaam (Rev. 2:14) Doctrine of Nicolaitans (Rev. 2:15) Doctrine of the Lord (Acts 13:12) Doctrine of God (Tit. 2:10)

The Doctrine “Doctrine” = revealed truth Argument: “Doctrine of Christ” = about Christ Argument: Context (v. 7) limits the “Doctrine” Verse 7 – is one specific application Verse 9 – states a general rule – parallel to “truth” The error of v. 7 is not the only violation of the doctrine

General Principle – Specific Application Passage General Prin. Specific App 1 Cor. 5 Put away (v. 13) Fornication (v. 1) 2 Thess. 3 Withdraw (v. 6) Lazy & busybodies (v. 11) Gal. 1:8-9 Another gospel Judaism 1 Cor. 15:33 Assoc. with false teachers Those who deny resurrection 2 John 9 Doctrine of Christ Deny Jesus come in the flesh (v. 7)

Do Not Receive Him (2 John 9-11) The Context The Doctrine The Condemned

The Condemned One who practices sin / error (v. 9) One who teacher error (v. 10) One who receives the false teacher (v. 11)
