7-3 Solving Subtraction and Addition Equations

Inverse operation is an operation that UNDOES another operation Inverse operation is an operation that UNDOES another operation. To solve an equation that has an unknown amount (variable), you will need to do the OPPOSITE operation to solve. Example: x + 7 = 10 - 7 -7 Since the original problem has the 7 being added, the inverse would be to subtract it from BOTH sides. Your final answer would be x = 3. Check your answer!

Take your solution of x = 3 and replace the x in the original equation with the amount you solved for: (3) + 7 = 10 10 = 10 Do they equal? YES they do…so 3 IS the correct solution.

Practice: 1) 8 = m – 6 2) r – 10 = 14 3) p – (– 2. 2) = 5 Practice: 1) 8 = m – 6 2) r – 10 = 14 3) p – (– 2.2) = 5.6 4) 2y – 1 – y = -3 *Make sure you check your answers!*
