One (manga artist)

Who is he? ONE is the pen name of a manga artist and writer, who has published popular series such as One Punch Man and Mob Psycho 100, he was born in 1986 in Niigata and raised in  Kōnosu, Saitama.

history One has stated in an interview that he’d been drawing manga ever since he was in primary school, but never told anyone about it, in fear of being made fun of As most of his classmates were into other things, His parents once found one of his comic strips called ‘middle aged man’ and were very angry with him, he decided then that instead of being shunned and made fun of for what he does, he decided to continue not tell anybody. He still now claims his manga drawing is only just a hobby, even with multiple popular series’ under his belt. Despite this One felt like he needed to share his vision and started uploading them on a mobile web comic site, which gained some traction, but he had an idea, but would mean the comic would take a break, essentially, he would work at his job for a year so he could do manga every day for the next year nonstop, and if that didn’t take off, he’d give up. But when he was about to quit, his peers found out about his manga again and almost convinced him to quit, which is when Yusuke Murata contacts One…

Murata’s proposition Yusuke Murata is a manga artist most famous for illustrating the manga Eyesheild 21 and working for Weekly Young Jump, he stumbled across One’s webcomic ‘One Punch Man’ and became an instant fan, so when he found about One’s situation, he had an idea, he messaged One and proposed a collaboration, where he would redraw and publish One’s One Punch Man in the magazine he was working for, ONE, already being a fan of Murata, jumped at the idea, and the rest is history.

Where he is now? Due to Murata’s help One’s One punch man has become a massive hit in japan and overseas and has been turned into an anime by Madhouse Studios , with season 2 confirmed for 2017, his other manga Mob Psycho 100 has also become serialized and turned into an anime by Studio Bones.

Why he inspires me As a comic creator, I can really respect ONE continuing to make manga even after he was discouraged by all his peers and to actually become successful, also on an art aspect, I have always felt inferior to other comic creators as I don’t feel my art is too great and people wouldn’t read my comic due to my art, but ONE’s art is what some may call sub par, yet he’s got a ton of different successful comics under his belt. He also never submitted to his fans on what to do with certain characters, he’s always done his own thing, regardless of what people say, I can relate to that as I also will tell my own story no matter what people think, as it’s my story, and as ONE did, I am going to keep trudging along with my comic until it gets me somewhere.
