Lesson Five: Active Families Lesson 5 combines healthy drinks, low fat dairy, and physical activity. Goal: Encourage families to make healthy choices about beverages and physical activity.

Begin Class Introduction Review, challenge discussion, introduction Nutrition Active families: Get up and move! Low-fat dairy: Consider samples Healthy Beverages If your course will be using the first option of sticking with the instructor guide’s lesson 5, you will be running a typical Cooking Matters class according to the patterns you have set up in the past 4 classes. The introduction should be led, as usual, by the facilitator, and include a discussion of the families’ experiences with last weeks challenge and an introduction of lesson 5. Using the instructor guide, the nutrition instructor should guide the families through the three nutrition topics for this lesson. Discuss the families’ previous knowledge of each topic and the health benefits of each.

Activities Overview Nutrition (continued) Culinary Healthy beverages: Select recipes that model nutrition concepts Sugar Overload One activity that has proven very popular and impactful with participants is the Sugar Overload activity. The facilitator and instructors should read over the activity on page I-22 and gather sugary beverage bottles or nutrition labels, as well as sugar and other measuring materials listed in the activity overview. If you wish to reuse materials for future courses, the facilitator can store the supplies for the activity, or create an interactive display, like the one pictured here, where participants are asked to rank laminated beverage photos in order on a Velcro board and the instructor reveals the correct answer and corresponding amounts of sugar in each. After the nutrition portion of the class, the culinary instructor should guide the families through cooking a recipe that incorporates low-fat dairy options if possible, accompanying the meal with a healthy beverage. Consider making multiple beverages or picking one from the list on page I-23. If your recipe requires waiting during cooking, consider adding a game to get the families moving and reinforce that physical activity can be easy to fit in and fun for the whole family. The facilitator can explore the “physical activity as a family” section of the instructor guide’s activity bank for ideas.

Debriefing Facilitator What went well? What could be improved? What activity will you use for class 6? Regardless of how you structure this class, don’t forget to spend a few extra minuets as a teaching team planning for the upcoming graduation at your next class. The facilitator should lead the group in deciding which activity to choose for Lesson 6 based on what supplies are available and the ages of participants. Deciding this activity now will allow everyone to have time to prepare for the grand finale next week!
