Michael Reid Assistant Deputy Minister Ontario Ministry of Energy Pan Canadian Summit on Reducing Diesel in Remote Communities The Role of Government Michael Reid Assistant Deputy Minister Ontario Ministry of Energy

The Role of Government Government as an enabler of community-driven initiatives Being flexible, allowing for creativity and innovative approaches Making balanced decisions and remaining cognizant of the ultimate goal of community well-being Seeking out opportunities for partnerships where interests align

Unique context in Ontario: Ontario Example Unique context in Ontario: 25 remote, diesel- dependent First Nations For 21 communities, grid connection is the preferred option and there is an economic business case supporting this approach For 4 communities we need to enable alternative approaches led by community needs and preferences

Ontario Example Ontario has allowed communities to lead the way, identify projects and choose partners to meet community needs. Wataynikaneyap Power’s grid connection project is being led by a consortium of First Nations Others working on renewable projects including solar-powered microgrid and biofuel Government role is to create the policy and regulatory framework to enable these projects to move forward. Enacting regulations Issuing policy directives Providing capacity support and capital funding through programs
