Development Matters 2 main areas: Number Shape, space and measures

Expectations At the end of the year, children in Reception are expected to: Number: Children count reliably with numbers from one to 20, place them in order and say which number is one more or one less than a given number. Using quantities and objects, they add and subtract two single-digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer. They solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing. Shape, space and measure: Children use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money to compare quantities and objects and to solve problems. They recognise, create and describe patterns. They explore characteristics of everyday objects and shapes and use mathematical language to describe them.

Resources What resources we use Counters, compare bears, objects- shells, pencils, pens- anything you can count Shapes Magnetic numbers Number lines and squares Numbers and shapes are all around us- signs, packaging…

Resources Number cards Number games- e.g. dominoes Pack of cards Socks- pairs, patterns Lego- towers 3D shapes- tins, tubes, bouncy balls, cereal packets Sing songs Scales- heavier and lighter Positional language- next to, behind…

How do we teach maths? We make it practical and hands-on Try to include it in all ‘subject’ areas 1:1, groups, whole class Everyday contexts ‘Put a number in your head’- mental calculations

Addition and Subtraction First, we begin with fun practical activities. You have 2 sweets. I give you 1 more. How many do you have altogether? You have 4 pencils. I take one away. How many pencils do you have left?

Addition and Subtraction Then, we learn how to write it as a number sentence. 2 + 1 = 3 4 - 1 = 3

Addition and subtraction 8 + 7 = We always remind the children to count the jumps not the numbers!

Multiplication First, we begin with fun practical activities. I have 5 friends coming to a party and each friend needs 2 slices of pizza for dinner. How many slices do I need?

Division First, we begin with fun practical activities. I have 8 cookies and need to share them with my friend. How many cookies do we get each?
