Presentation transcript:

SIFT: An AP strategy designed to help you explore how a writer uses literary elements and stylistic techniques to convey meaning and/or theme S: symbol: examine the title and text for symbolism (How does this help the author develop the theme?) I: images: identify images and sensory details (Why is this important to the development of the theme?) F: figures of speech: analyze figurative language and other devices (simile, metaphor, paradox, personification, hyperbole, pun, etc.) for how they help the author develop his/her theme T: tone AND theme: discuss how all devices reveal tone and theme (which are conveyed by diction and imagery)
